A youth hockey coach, a soccer coach, a volunteer firefighter and a former deputy sheriff are among the 23 men recently arrested in Polk County and charged with soliciting sex from a child via the Internet.
The arrests took place Thursday through Sunday as part of a Polk County Sheriff’s Office undercover operation, according to a media release.
The two-week “Operation Guardian” involved several agencies but was directed by Polk County detectives. It is the third such Polk County operation directed to fight Internet crimes against children.
The men arrested had lived in or stayed in cities around Florida and had traveled to an undercover location in Polk County to have sex with a child, a release shows.
Undercover detectives used instant messaging and chat rooms to help apprehend the suspects, according to the release.
“It’s obvious that these deviants never learn, and it’s disappointing to know that we have arrested child predators who come from public service industries.” Sheriff Grady Judd said in a release. “This reconfirms our dedication to our number one cause, and that’s keeping children safe. The message to the predators is this: If we didn’t arrest you this time, we will get you next time. You are going to leave Polk County’s children alone.”
In a release, Attorney General Bill McCollum congratulated the efforts of the sheriff’s office and other agencies that took part in the operation.
“These individuals would have victimized helpless children were it not for the efforts of these dedicated men and women fighting for the safety of Florida’s youngest citizens,” McCollum said in the release. “My office will work to ensure that these internet child predators will be shown no mercy in the courtroom, just as they would have shown no mercy towards their intended victims.”
