More times than not during our daily forecasts in the spring and summer, we mention “sea breeze.” But just what does that mean???!!
As the temperature outside warms up during the day, the land heats up much quicker than the water in the Gulf of Mexico. Because of this temperature difference, a small-scale wind system develops. During the day, the wind blows from the cooler Gulf waters toward the warmer land. We call this a sea breeze. The opposite happens at night. Since the land actually cools quicker than the water, a land breeze sets up. Winds blow from the land toward the water.
The reason we talk so much about the sea breeze is because it can make a big difference on the afternoon forecast! When the sea breeze reaches your area, it brings the relatively cooler conditions from the Gulf and keeps you cooler than other parts of the Bay Area. Also, along the sea breeze “front,” we often see storms develop.
