Former state Sen. Dan Webster, a Winter Garden Republican, is considering entering the Republican primary for governor, according to a couple of sources close to Webster.

If he did enter the race, Webster likely would draw support from at least some social and religious conservatives, many of whom regard him as the top leader for their causes in Florida.

One source close to Webster estimated the chances he’d get in the race as “about 60 percent.” None could say when Webster would make a decision, but said they had been told it was OK to spread the word he was considering the idea.

Webster, a former speaker of the state House who was later elected to the state Senate. He considered a U.S. Senate race in 2004, but decided to stay out of that race.

Of course, Webster would face an uphill battle—party leaders have sought, successfully so far, to keep the primary field clear for Attorney General Bill McCollum. Agriculture Commissioner Charles Bronson bowed to that pressure this week, reversing his state plans to run for governor.
