You can! You may have heard us mention CoCoRaHS during our newscasts. CoCoRaHS stands for The Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network. It is a network of observers that report precipitation values from their backyards each day. According to their website, you just need a few things to get started
-The desire and commitment to help study and learn about precipitation and storms
-A 4” rain gauge and your own unique station number and name
-Training (click on Training for more information)
-Internet access
Don’t have a rain gauge handy? No problem. You can purchase one from their website for about $30. Click here to go to the CoCoRaHS website. That’s it! Easy, right? We use some of the submitted observations on-air from time to time. Just think...your observation could be read on live TV! Ok, it’s not the coolest thing in the world but it would really help close the gap between observation sites. Observations are very important in weather forecasting. Most of the official observing stations are only in densely populated areas or along major roadways. Your information will help to produce better precipitation forecasts in the future.
