This Sunday, Miami hosts Super Bowl XLIV between the Super Bowl veteran Indianapolis Colts and Super Bowl first-timers the New Orleans Saints.
This marks the 15th time the National Football League’s championship game has been played in the Sunshine State and the 10th time Miami plays host.
That’s more than any other state or city.
California is second among states, with 11, and New Orleans is second among cities, with 9.
Here are some other numbers that tell the story of Super Bowls in Florida:
• A Florida team has played in a Florida Super Bowl 0 times.
• Five years is the longest period Florida has ever gone without a Super Bowl (1971-1976, 1979-1984 and 1984-1989).
• Florida games tend to be more exciting by one measure: The average score difference is 11, compared with 16 in non-Florida championships.
• Super Bowl XLIV marks only the second time two Florida Super Bowls have been played back to back (Super Bowls II and III).
• The Steelers and Colts have each played in three Florida Super Bowls. Pittsburgh won all three, the Colts two.
• The Steelers and Cowboys have met twice in Florida (Miami) for the Super Bowl.
• Super Bowls have been played in five Florida stadiums across three cities.
• Average attendance for Florida Super Bowls, 75,422, is less than the average of all other Super Bowls, 85,197.
• At Super Bowl II, the Green Bay Packers won a record third NFL championship in a row
• Most Super Bowl yards per carry: Tom Matte, 10.5 yards in Super Bowl III
• Most turnovers: Super Bowl V in Miami, 11 combined by the Colts and Cowboys.
• Most receiving yards: Jerry Rice in Super Bowl XXIII, 215 yards.
• Highest scoring game: 75 points, 49ers and Chargers, Super Bowl XXIX, Joe Robbie Stadium.
• Most touchdown passes: Same game, Steve Young of the 49ers.
