State Democratic Party Chairwoman Karen Thurman today said incoming Republican state House Speaker Ray Sansom of Destin should resign because of revelations that he’s getting a $100,000-a-year job at a community college for which he delivered appropriations.
As Republican legislative leaders are saying Floridians should tighten their belts during tough economic times and preparing to cut education, health care and public safety, “Sansom delivered more than $25 million in additional funds to Northwest Florida State College,” Thurman said. “Less than a year later, Northwest Florida State College hired Sansom for a $110,000 a year part-time job.
“The appearance of impropriety is too great for Ray Sansom to as remain speaker and keep his job with the Northwest Florida State Colleage,” she said.
Thurman named other Republican legislators who recently have taken jobs in the state university system: Sen. Evelyn Lynn of Ormond Beach, Sen. Mike Haridopolos of Merritt Island and former state House Speaker Marco Rubio.
