I’ve never been to this conference before, but I keep hearing people talk about the wild protests when the conference was held in Durban, South Africa and Barcelona. I was just about the comment on how quiet it’s been this year, when a group of protesters from India gathered on a balcony in the convention center.
I have to say, it wasn’t the most effective protest. Their signs were small, so they were impossible to read unless you were standing right next to them. Also, the acoustics in the convention center aren’t great, so their chanting basically sounded like garble. The consensus in the group of people I’m with is that they were protesting big pharmaceutical companies (that’s a pretty good guess, considering it’s a popular group for AIDS activists to protest). Guesses on the chants are still up in the air.
Hopefully the protests get a little more interesting - and coherent - later in the week.
