The Deciders

1:23 p.m.

Since the jury is deliberating, I figured I’d remind folks about who’s on the panel.

There are six men and six women who are deciding Couey’s fate. There are another three men who are alternates in the case.

#1 A young black man who works in customer service. He’s been absolutely unreadable during the trial – very attentive, but not showing any kind of emotion.

#2 A middle aged black woman who works at a university. She’s been very attentive as well, often taking long looks at evidence at presented. Tuesday, she seemed to cast a disgusted look at Couey.

#3 A middle-aged white female who works as a billing clerk at children’s psychiatric center. Attentive, she’s been seen crying and clutching tissues during some of the testimony.

#4 A middle age black man who works for a phone company. This is Mr. Sleepy. He may be attentive, but if he it’s with his eyes closed. He constantly looks like he’s fighting a losing battle with his next nap. Oddly enough, he was most attentive during DNA testimony, when some other jurors developed thousand-yard stares.

#5 A middle age Hispanic man who’s a ground crew worker at Miami International Airport. He’s been relatively poker-faced throughout the proceedings, but showed some keen interest in jury instructions and closing arguments.

#6 An older white female who’s a retired librarian. She has paid close attention to testimony and arguments, and has been crying somewhat during the trial.

#7 A middle aged white man who’s a computer software engineer. He’s paid close attention during the trial, but hasn’t shown any emotion.

#8 A young Latina who manages an upscale retail store. She’s shown shock at some of the testimony, covering her mouth and seeming on the verge of tears.

#9 A young Latina who works as a computer helpdesk specialist for a school district. She as been extremely attentive and unemotional during the trial, although she has furrowed her brow and looked perturbed at some testimony.

#10 A white male who works as in commercial real estate. The guy’s face has been blank-slate during much of the testimony.

#11 A middle aged Hispanic male who works in real estate and is a hospital administrator. He has been attentive, and was seen crying and covering his face during some of Tuesday’s graphic medical examiner testimony.

#12 A young Hispanic woman who’s an insurance analyst. She has been attentive during the trial, sometimes leaning forward to listen closely to important testimony. She hasn’t seemed to show any emotion, but has definitely been paying close attention.

There it is – the jury.
