If weather was the determining factor for choosing the site of the 2012 Republican National Convention in late August, Salt Lake City would probably top Tampa and Phoenix.
The blog DemConWatch, which is keeping up with news of the two major parties’ 2012 political conventions, posted a blog item recently about the average temperatures of the three cities under consideration by the Republicans.
By temperature alone, Tampa looks pretty reasonable—the average temperature, according to DemConWatch, is 90 degrees in August, compared to 88 degrees in Salt Lake City and 105 degrees in Phoenix.
Of course, those of us who live in Tampa Bay know there’s a little something called humidity in late August. Using the temperatures above, along with monthly humidity figures from the National Weather Service showing morning humidity at 90 percent and heat index calculators, it would feel like 122 degrees outside.
But then, even with about half the humidity of Tampa, heat index figures show it would feel like 135 degrees in the morning. Yes, it’s a dry heat and maybe you don’t sweat, but once you get over 100, let’s face it—it’s hot.
Leaving Salt Lake City, with the most reasonable heat index—a mere 98 degrees.
