Florida Chief Financial Officer Alex Sink will run for re-election to her current job rather than seeking the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Sen. Mel Martinez, she announced this morning.
Here’s a statement Sink emailed this morning to supporters and the press:
“Over the past several weeks, I have given serious and careful thought to my own future and, more importantly, to the future of our state. And I am extremely grateful for the support and advice so many friends and fellow Floridians have shared. I believe my skills and abilities are of greatest use here in Florida, where I am honored to serve as Chief Financial Officer. And I will run for re-election as Chief Financial Officer to continue being a fiscal watchdog on behalf of the people of Florida.”
Sink, a Democrat, would have been the front-runner for the Democratic nomination if she had run.
“She really likes the job [of CFO], and she thinks she’s helping,” her husband, Tampa lawyer Bill McBride, sad of her decision.
Sink’s withdrawal from the race, along with Jeb Bush’s decision not to seek the Republican nomination, guarantees a flood of candidates from both parties in the face.
One prominent Democrat, U.S. Rep. Kendrick Meek of Miami, already has announced.
