Q Poll: Mack has long lead in primary, ties Nelson in general matchup

Rep. Connie Mack IV has a long lead in the Republican U.S. Senate primary, and is tied with Democratic incumbent Sen. Bill Nelson in a general election matchup, according to a new Quinnipiac University poll.

Mack got 42 percent to Nelson’s 41 percent, a significant move upward for Mack over the last month, but statistically a tie considering the poll’s 2.4-point error margin.

Nelson led Mack by eight points, 44-36 percent, in a March Quinnipiac poll.
Nelson will face the winner of the Republican primary in the November general election.

In that primary race, Mack got 40 percent of Republican respondents in the poll, compared to 8 percent for Mike McCalister and 7 percent for George LeMieux.

But the leading response from GOP voters remained “don’t know,” with 41 percent, plus another 4 percent saying they’d vote for someone else or wouldn’t vote.

Nelson led LeMieux 43 percent to 36 percent in a general election matchup.

The poll didn’t include former U.S. Rep. Dave Weldon, who just announced last week he’ll enter the race.
