Going against the grain of some conservative Republican comments on the nomination of Judge Sonia Sotomayor for the U.S. Supreme Court, U.S. Rep. Adam Putnam, R-Bartow, said today he considers her qualified and likely to be confirmed.
“From what I know about her I believe her to be qualified and in the absence of any forthcoming disclosure, I believe that she she should be confirmed,” he said in an interview.
Putnam, who’s leaving his congressional seat to run for agriculture commissioner, issued the disclaimer that he hasn’t had time to research Sotomayor’s legal background. But he said she “certainly appears on her face to be highly qualified.”
“It’s obviously the source of great pride among the Hispanic community to have broken yet another barrier in American history” he added. “Absent some really remarkable event in her past I expect her to be confirmed and confirmed with Republican votes.”
