PurplePoll: Romney narrows gap v. Obama

A poll focussing on swing states by the bipartisan political consulting firm Purple Strategies shows Mitt Romney narrowing the gap by which he trails President Barack Obama, and moving up in voters’ opinions.

The poll focuses on 12 swing states the firm says are likely to decide the election: Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Minnesota, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico,
North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Wisconsin.

In those states, it says, Obama leads Romney by 48-44 percent.

Romney’s favorability ratings among voters hit a low point in February of 27 percent favorable, 57 percent unfavorable, and have now gone up to to 38 percent favorable, 48 percent unfavorable.

In Florida, Romney led Obama 47-45 percent, and his favorability ratings were barely positive, 45-44 percent favorable-unfavorable.

In the other three states most likely to swing the election, the results were also statistical ties or close: In Ohio, Obama 49 percent and Romney 44 percent; in Virginia, Obama 48 percent and Romney 46 percent; and in Colorado, 47 percent each.

Purple Strategies, based in Alexandria, Va. and Houston, was founded by veteran political consultants including Republican Alex Castellanos and Democrat Steve McMahon.

Its polls use automated dialing, or “robopolling.” The overall sample for this poll, done April 19-23, was 1,705 likely voters, for an error margin of 2.4 percentage points. State-level results had smaller samples and a 4.1-point error margin.
