A new Public Policy Polling poll shows Bill McCollum leading Alex Sink 44-31 in the Florida governor’s race, and shows some evidence that a Republican attack ad against her is working.
“Neither of the top candidates for governor of Florida is particularly well known or liked but with the national political winds blowing in a Republican direction Bill McCollum has the solid early lead,” said pollster Tom Jensen.
He noted that for both candidates, half the voters didn’t know enough to express an opinion on them, but for both, slightly more voters gave negative than positive opinions.
For McCollum, it was 25 percent favorable, 26 percent unfavorable and 50 percent not sure (rounding error). For Sink, it was 23 percent favorable, 27 percent unfavorable and 50 percent unsure.
That indicates an attack ad by the Republican Governors Association may have worked, because in past polls, Sink was also comparatively unknown, but had more favorable than unfavorable ratings. In a January Quinnipiac University poll, she had a 24-8 favorable to unfavorable rating, with 68 percent undecided.
The error margin on the PPP poll was 3.4 points.
