A quick scan of my daily online local reads reveals some hyperlocal gems.
Josh at Empirical Polk has a great photo (which by itself says quite a bit) and an analysis of the likely Ledger/News Chief endgame. See here. As a west Polk Ledger subscriber, I’m thrilled that East Polk news is now part of my daily local section. That happened in tandem with the demise of the East Polk section within the last couple of weeks.
Josh also has a rather blunt assessment o the Eagle Ridge Mall, along with a new (for me) on line abbreviation. Education is a wonderful process, as my Grandfather used to say. Although, honestly, are there any indoor malls that aren’t depressing? Maybe I just have an anti-mall bias.
Speaking of the The Ledger, Tom Palmer’s blog recently provided one of those periodic “new media” moments. He questioned his own newsroom over coverage of a recent train/truck collision and then stuck to his guns with a commentor who took the newsroom’s side. A small thing, but sort of interesting.
Chuck at Lakeland Local gives a 10-year anniversary tribute to Mitchell’s coffee shop, a true Lakeland original.
And of course, Lorrie and Chuck continue to spend a disturbingly large amount of time dissecting American Idol. Sigh.

Thanks for the links. When the Ledger purchased the News-Chief name I detailed my thoughts on the demise of the News-Chief: http://lakelandlocal.com/2008/03/polk-county-ledger.html
I believe advertising coverage drove that deal. I said in March the Ledger wouldn’t want to spend money growing a competing brand. On Josh’s blog I picked Dec 26th as the last day for the News Chief print edition, but I’m an optimist.
Since I’m a one=person staff I have to do features and tv commentary as well as news. AI gives me an hour to forget CSX. You should give the show a shot. Maybe you could do a column on “So You Think You Can Dance?”
