Other Storms Made 2 Trips Over Mainland Florida

Some storms, not many but some, seem to like the Florida mainland so much they hit it twice. The latest is forecast to be Tropical Storm Fay. That’s if the center of the storm ever completely departs Florida real estate. It’s been idling with half the center off the coast for three hours.

Checking hurricane records since 1950, four other storms made return trips to Florida, with the most recent in 1994.  That’s when Tropical Storm Gordon hit in November, coming across the coast first near Fort Myers and exiting near Vero Beach. Gordon moved about in the Atlantic Ocean enough to threaten North Carolina before deciding to loop back across the Florida east coast as what the National Hurricane Center summary called an “inconsequential” tropical depression.

The 1960s seem to have been a popular decade for returning storms.

In 1969, Tropical Storm Jenny hit between Naples and Fort Myers and crossed the state to emerge just north of Cape Canaveral, only to make an immediate swing back into the state and head into the Gulf as a depression.

A year earlier, Tropical Storm Abby hit near Punta Gorda and crossed the state into the Atlantic near Titusville and made a quick trip back close to Vero Beach.

Then in 1960, Tropical Storm Florence hit Southwest Florida and moved inland to Lake Okeechobee before making a U-turn back into the Gulf and hitting Pensacola.
