Of ‘The Speech,’ Logistics and McCain’s VP Choice

Wednesday night was something else. The roll call, with Illinois yielding to New York so that Sen. Clinton could move Sen. Obama by acclamation was electrifying. Sen. Kerry’s speech was strong and energizing. President Clinton brought the house down and Sen. Biden built it back up.

But Thursday is all about “the speech.”

The delegation met for more cold eggs and unknown speakers. The logistics of Thursday night’s speech at Invesco Field was a nightmare and the details were late in coming. Karen Thurman, the Florida Democratic Party chair, did all she could to stall until she could get transportation information. She would have made any basketball coach proud. It didn’t help.

The transportation, signage and facilities were not user friendly. Some buses dropped us off at the wrong gates and resulted in our being on lines for hours. On the other hand, the weather was perfect, not too hot, breezy and clear.

The speakers were impressive, ranging from a long line of retired generals to President Eisenhower’s granddaughter, Susan Eisenhower. One of the union reps gave me a HUGE flag to wave when Al Gore came on. I mean it was HUGE!! A two-hander. It was so big people around me offered to help hold it up. I’ve got to tell you, it was a real thrill. I waved that flag with all my might. It was exhilarating.

Finally, the speech. It was all it needed to be and much much more. If you didn’t see or hear it, you must do so. Do yourself a favor and listen to it. I guarantee you will be inspired.

A president who inspires us – I didn’t think that was still legal.

The stars and stripes (in the form of confetti) rained down, streamers flew up and fireworks blazed. 70,000 Democrats answered with a booming “fired up! Ready to go!”

We will be home Saturday night. The real work begins on Sunday.

As a postscript, McCain has just named Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his vice presidential choice. For those of you who don’t know who she is (which is everybody) she has been Alaska governor for but two years, is 44 years old and is more socially conservative than Mike Huckabee. More big oil, more drilling and an ingénue, a heartbeat away from a 72-year-old at the top of their ticket.

Be afraid. Be very afraid.

You show your ignorance with the big oil comment, since she has went after corruption in the state commission in regards to oil and secured additional money from the oil companies for the citizen of her state
