Not long after its reporters did an investigative story that raised the toughest questions yet about Gov. Charlie Crist’s Everglades restoration land purchase deal, the newpaper’s editorial board has backed the deal.
“Far more will have to happen to restore the water flows that once sustained the Everglades. But the United States Sugar lands are a critically important first step,” concludes the NYT’s editorial.
The investigative story March 7 painted a different picture. It suggested the purchase would do more to help U.S. Sugar, whose land the state would buy, than the Everglades; that the money the purchase cost would force postponement or abandonment of existing restoration projects; and that political allies of Crist also may have benefitted.
Of course, at the Time, as in virtually all traditional newspapers, editorial opinions and news coverage are separate and not coordinated. Newspaper editorialists do tend to pay attention to the reporting of their own publications, but it’s still not unusual for editorial boards to react differently than newsrooms do.
