Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum, who has run for the Senate twice before, says he’s seriously considering a run for the seat Mel Martinez will vacate in 2010.
“I have been asked today whether this announcement will have any effect on my plans for the future,” he said in a statement this morning. “At this point, my plan is – at the appropriate time – to announce my intention to seek re-election as Florida’s Attorney General. However, given today’s development, I will seriously consider and discuss with my family a race for this U.S. Senate seat, and we will share our decision at a later date.”
McCollum narrowly lost the Republican primary for the same Senate seat to Martinez in 2004 and lost in an open-seat Senate race in 2000 to U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson.
