Florida Republican Sen. Mel Martinez expressed regret over the resignation of controversial Mississippi Republican Sen. Trent Lott.
Martinez said Lott has been an ally of Florida in congressional efforts to reform national flood insurance.
“I enjoyed working with Trent; he has been a great whip for our [Senate GOP] conference and he will be missed,” said Martinez.
Lott, formerly Senate majority leader, was ousted from the post five years ago over remarks he made at retiring Sen. Strom Thurmond’s 100th birthday party that seemed to support segregationist policies Thurmond had championed.
Lott, whose current Senate term runs through 2012, announced Monday he’ll leave office prior to January.
