Look at that dot to the right of the Moon. People in the office have been wondering all night what it is. The current thinking at NASA is that it is Mars.
Mars and the Moon are opposite the Sun in the Earth’s sky right now which makes them both appear exceptionally bright. The Moon is also full tonight.
Mars will not be this close to Earth again until 2016 according to NASA.
So a big night for the Moon and Mars all around.
Mars may need to rest up for January though. The odds makers at NASA’s Near Earth Object Program are giving Mars a 1 in 75 chance of throwing down with an asteroid next month.
