Launch Tonight Iffy, Friday Off Too

NASA readied for a Thursday night shuttle launch, despite lingering clouds as the agency chief nixed a Friday launch attempt because of an even worse forecast.

Launch beneath a nearly full moon was set for 9:35 p.m. EST with the shuttle and its seven astronauts heading to the international space station on a rewiring mission as construction continues on the orbiting lab.

But the odds for a break in the clouds at launch time were only at 40 percent. And NASA Administrator Michael Griffin told The Associated Press that if the shuttle doesn’t go up Thursday night, the forecast for Friday is so bad that the next liftoff attempt will be Saturday.
