Bad news for Hillary Clinton this morning is certain to have Democrats asking whether it’s time for her quest for the presidential nomination to end.
Last night’s primaries ended in an outcome that came as close as possible to a campaign-ending defeat as Clinton could have come without actually sustaining one.
Beforehand, pundits and party activists had speculated that if Clinton and Obama split the primaries, as expected, it would only extend the stalemate between the two; that two wins for Clinton would slow Obama’s momentum; and that two losses for Clinton would put handwriting on her wall.
Clinton lost by a larger margin than expected in North Carolina and managed only a razor-thin win in Indiana. Then this morning, news broke that she has been sustaining her campaign with a large infusion of personal cash—$6.4 million over the last month.
The Clinton campaign is is now beginning a conference call on “the state of the race.” We’ll update soon on what’s said.
