The National Hurricane Center says that Ike made landfall in eastern Cuba this evening around 9:45pm. The eye crossed in the province of Holguin near Punto de Sama. At the time, winds were estimated to be 125 mph.
The above picture is a look at Ike from Havana’s harbor earlier this afternoon. Hundreds of thousands of people have been evacuated. I have seen some of the first video coming out Cuba, and it’s not good. The video I saw had waves crashing almost as tall as buildings.
As of the 11pm update from the National Hurricane Center, the Bay Area remains out of the cone of uncertainty. But Ike is expected to be a major hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico by late this week.
