Huckabee Makes Tampa Appearance

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, a Republican who’s exploring a run for governor, will make a stop in Tampa June 8 for a conference on obesity at the University of South Florida.

That’s about as non-political an appearance as a potential candidate for president is likely to make during the run-up to Florida’s early primary. Once severely overweight, Huckabee lost 110 pounds after being diagnosed with diabetes in 2003. Since then, he has made many speeches and appearances on the subject of weight loss.

But it’s no accident this will be Huckabee’s second appearance in three weeks in the Central Florida area. A former Baptist pastor, he spoke to a gathering of religious right activists in Orlando May 19.

Huckabee has formed an exploratory committee for a presidential run, but hasn’t declared a candidacy.

A press spokeswoman didn’t immediately know what else Huckabee might be doing in Tampa during the visit, but it’s unlikely he’d come only for the obesity event and not make some political moves while he’s here.
