The Florida Democratic Party has piled on to the criticism of Republican presidential candidate John McCain’s inability to say, in an interview yesterday, exactly how many houses he and his wife own—but the McCain campaign says the ad breaks Barack Obama’s pledge not to attack opponents’ families.
The party has produced a web ad—see it here —based on the “priceless” Visa ads. It mocks the eight houses, the $500 Italian shoes McCain wore to a country music concert in North Florida and the couple’s $10 million private jet, and says that convincing the American people you’re “in touch” on the economy is “priceless.”
But the ad also includes a clip of Cindy McCain telling a CNN interviewer, “In Arizona the only way to get around the state is by small private plane.”
That inspired a comback shot from the McCain people.
“It is profoundly disappointing to see surrogates for Barack Obama attacking Cindy McCain, particularly after Obama himself claimed that ‘families are off limits’ and pledged to ‘speak out against’ attacks on spouses in this campaign,” said McCain campaign spokeswoman Jill Hazelbaker.
