Summerfield Elementary Principal Margo Michalak said the teaching situation is much better than she expected—14 classroom teachers and six resource teachers took the day off, but other teachers, teachers’ aides and substitutes will cover for them. Before 6 a.m., they had at least 15 staff volunteers. Before 7 a.m., about 12 students had arrived.
Some cars are starting to come in, just before the start of school. But based on what she’s seeing, Michalak expects attendance to be lighter today. “As teachers we have to be creative.” Like every school, Summerfield had a plan and put it in place. Someone is greeting every car, and every parent is asked how the child is getting home. They are down three bus runs today and have three of seven cafeteria workers.
Four or five buses arriving at the school could be seen with no more than seven students in each.
