Tom Slade, former chairman of the state Republican Party of Florida, has “enthusiastically endorsed” state Sen. Paula Dockery of Lakeland for governor, according to a statement just released by her campaign.
Slade, of Jacksonville, led the state GOP during the 1990s when Gov. Jeb Bush was running for governor. Other than a handful of Dockery’s colleagues in the state Senate, Slade is the first big-name establishment Republican who has come out publicly in support of Dockery’s campaign.
According to the release, Slade had this to say about the senator: “Paula is smart. She’s got good business sense. She is a strong leader. And she’s been around state government long enough to know every nook and cranny of the process, and how it works. She also is a very pleasant, personable individual. She’d be a likable governor.”
What about the Attorney General Bill McCollum, whose long list of prominent backers includes Bush and every Republican member of Florida’s Congressional delegation?
Here’s Slade’s take on the GOP frontrunner: “McCollum is a nice guy, but I think he would be better in the U.S. Senate, where I think his skills are better suited. But I think Paula would do a better job of being governor. She’s got the kind of tenacity you need, and she’s got the knowledge.”
