South Carolina Sen. Jim DeMint—one of the leading figures in the move to drag the national Republican Party to the right—will headline the Hillsborough County Republican Party’s major annual fundraising dinner in March.
DeMint was one of the earliest big-name backers of Marco Rubio in the U.S. Senate primary against Gov. Charlie Crist, and is one of the hardest-line anti-Obama legislators in Washington.
He’ll speak at the county party’s Lincoln Day Dinner March 6, the biggest fundraising event of the year for the local party.
Hillsborough County party Chairman Deborah Cox-Roush has maintained public neutrality in the Crist-Rubio race, and has said the county party won’t take sides in the primary.
Bringing in DeMint as headliner at the local party’s main annual fundraiser, however, is a clear indication the local GOP group leans toward the conservative side of the moderate-conservative split in the party.
