Deer Park planned for traffic on the first day, expecting more parents than usual to want to drop off their children.
The school reserved the first driveway for its five buses and steered parents to a route behind the school. Balloons and sign reading “Rangers lead the way” decorated the first parking lot, and Principal Lou Cerreta smiled as he directed drivers over muddy ground to an overflow lot on the two paved play courts.
Physical Education Teacher Jill Brown said she was thrilled to be in the new building and couldn’t wait to take advantage of the courts. But she would have to wait until the parents cleared out and they stopped functioning as a parking lot.
