Jury selection for the trial of John Couey began Monday in Miami. Couey is accused of raping and murdering 9-year-old Jessica Marie “Jessie” Lunsford in 2005. The trial, which was supposed to take place in Inverness, was moved to the southern reaches of the state after a judge determined that an unbiased jury could not be seated so close to the scene of the crime.
We hit the streets to see just how close the Tampa Bay area is to this case. Explore these questions, submit your comments and tell us: Could you be on the jury?
The questions are:
1) What do you know about the circumstances surrounding the death of Jessica Lunsford?
2) Are you aware of any statements made by John Couey after his arrest?
3) If the defendant were found guilty and the judge deemed it appropriate, could you recommend the death penalty?
4) The defense is suggesting that John Couey is mentally retarded. If the defendant were found guilty but mentally handicapped, could you recommend imprisonment or the death penalty?
5) If you were a member of the jury, would you be able to hear the case in an impartial manner?
