Cold Again!

For many of us it’s warmer this morning and for all of us it feels warmer because the winds are much lighter today.
Yesterday’s wind chill values were well into the 20s.  The wind steals the heat right from our bodies, that’s why it’s important to bundle up on those cold windy mornings.
Today’s cool down is caused by radiational cooling.  This occurs when conditions are calm and clear.  The calm and clear conditions allow the heat gathered during the day to radiate quickly and easily off the surface of the earth into the atmosphere once it gets dark.  Winds which make humans feel colder, actually help to keep temperatures warmer because the heat doesn’t rise into the atmosphere as easily.
