Church of God members gather for praise despite wreckage

People are gathering at the Lady Lake Church of God, where churchgoers have fashioned a makeshift altar out of the wreckage of their church, destroyed in Friday’s tornado. About 150 folding chairs are facing the stage. Behind the altar is a large wooden cross salvaged yesterday. It’s flanked by an American flag and a church flag. There’s an organ and a drum set, and people are playing and singing. Members dance and raise their hands to the warm-up music ... the service doesn’t start ‘til 10:45 a.m. It’s a cold, crisp day.

Much of the site has been cleared. People are laughing and sharing fellowship. The atmosphere is one of optimism. I expect the service to be lively. George Honeywell told me: “We praise and worship more than a lot of churches do. We believe in giving the Lord all the praise and glory.”

There’s media everywhere. Nearby, the Florida Conference of Seventh-Day Adventists have set up a command center and are serving breakfast and giving people water and supplies.
