Rep. Kathy Castor of Tampa says she wants fellow Democrat and state Chief Financial Officer Alex Sink to run for Mel Martinez’s Senate seat in 2010, even if Martinez is running for re-election.
“I am encouraging her to run,” Castor said in an interview today.
Martinez, a Republican, has not said whether he plans to seek a second, six-year Senate term in 2010.
Castor, whose own name has been floated as a potential candidate, said she has had several conversations with Sink on the topic.
Of course, there might not be much love lost between Castor and Martinez. He won the seat by narrowly defeating Castor’s mother, Betty Castor, in 2004 in a hard-fought race marked by Martinez’s accusations that Castor was soft on terrorism.
