Tampa’s freshman Rep. Kathy Castor will address the Democratic National Convention on Wednesday.
“I’m very honored,” said Castor, who just got the word from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office.
Castor was an early Florida supporter of Barack Obama’s, partly at the behest of her mother, Betty Castor, who got to know Obama during her unsuccessful 2004 Senate race against Republican Sen. Mel Martinez. Castor the daughter is now talked about as a re-election challenger to Martinez in 2010.
Her speech is tentatively set for 7 p.m. EDT.
Castor said the topic is expected to be higher education and the expansion of educational opportunities for veterans under the new GI Bill, both items she’s worked on during in first term in Congress.
