Out of the Park with Rays Fans

6 p.m.: Catch Of The Day

Quinn George, 7 years old, an unbuttoned Rays game jersey draped over his shoulders, a Rays cap on backwards, a baseball in his hand, stands at the wall next to Tropicana Field.

He barely peers above it, but someone he manages to get the attention of Rays pitcher James Shields, who was playing catch.

Shields comes over and tosses him a ball. Like any good ballplayer, Quinn snags the ball and throws it back, ready to play catch. Shields chuckles, and hand delivers the ball to the boy again, telling him to keep it.

They shake hands, do a high-five, and Shields teaches him a little fist-bumping, as his mother, Frances, looks on.

Excited, Quinn takes the ball and runs back to the seats, as his mother follows. The new ball is headed “where the other Rays things are,” he said.

Frances Quinn, of St. Petersburg, said her son plays in a youth baseball league and already has a cap signed by Rays player Aki Iwamura, some player statues and Rays foam finger in his collection.

Appreciate the interview of our son Quinn, Mr. Girardi. He’ll always remember it. By the way, his mothers name would be Frances George, not Frances Quinn.
