3 Senate Dem Candidates To Appear At GLBT Caucus

Posted Feb 17, 2009 by William March

The first public appearance by all three announced Democratic U.S. Senate candidates will take place Saturday in an environment that seems particularly favorable to one of those three—North Miami Mayor Kevin Burns, who’s openly gay, will join state Sen. Dan Gelber and U.S. Rep. Kendrick Meek at a conference of the Democratic gay-lesbian caucus in Fort Myers Saturday.

But all three candidates are likely to seriously court support from the caucus, whose formal name is the Gay Lesbian Bisexual and Transgendered Caucus, or GLBT.

Gelber and Burns will speak in person to the caucus Saturday, while Meek will appear by conference call.

Burns, the most recent addition to the candidate field, is announcing today; more candidates are expected.

Asked whether he hopes for support from the GLBT caucus, Burns said, “I’m the only one that has first-hand experience on the issues important to our community because I live those issues every day.”

Burns lives with a partner of 25 years, and their seven-year-old adopted daughter. Florida does not allow same-sex couple to adopt, but they adopted their daughter through the state of Vermont, he said.
