Volunteering, by the numbers

Posted Feb 7, 2010 by Jeff Scullin

Updated Feb 7, 2010 at 06:01 PM

In case you missed Sunday’s Tampa Tribune, Michelle Bearden had a fine story about how volunteering is surging as more people find themselves out of work, without discretionary funds to donate to their favorite causes—or both. As someone who has spent a lot of time volunteering and working with volunteers, the story strikes close to my heart.

These days, I spend a lot of time working with data and data visualizations. So I was really please to find this Flash visualization today from GOOD—sort of a Web collective of do-gooders. This breaks down the number of men and women who volunteer, broken out by the type of agencies for which they volunteer. These are 2009 numbers, from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
