Fred Thompson’s campaign organization, Friends of Fred, now has confirmed that he’ll announce Sept. 6 that he’s running for president, and that he’ll visit Florida at least twice in September, including a stop in Tallahassee and possibly one in Tampa.
Thompson’s announcement will be followed by a tour of Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina, “quickly followed by stops in Florida and a homecoming in Lawrenceburg, TN on the 15th,” a news release from the organization said.
Former state House member and lobbyist Sandy Safley, a Thompson supporter and volunteer, confirmed that Thompson will be back in Florida Sept. 18.
He couldn’t confirm comments by local Republicans that Thompson is planning a Tampa fundraising for that date.
Safley said Thompson will go to Tallahassee that day—the opening of a special legislative session—to meet with supporters in the Legislature. He said 20 members of the state House have signed a letter encouraging Thompson to run, which Safley said represents a larger number of Florida House supporters than any other candidate.
