In the meeting of Democratic Party activists in Lake Mary to pick a new state party chairman, the first vote taken on a preliminary issue looks like a win for Allison Tant of Tallahassee.

The vote between Tant and Alan Clendenin of Tampa is just now starting, but beforehand, the gathering considered challenges to the credentials of voting members of the state Democratic executive committee.

Forces loyal to Clendenin lost the only vote on a challenge, an attempt to reinstate Clendenin supporter Alma Gonzalez of Tallahassee as a voting member.

The outcome: 597 votes on Tant’s side of a procedural question on the challenge, 481 on Clendenin’s side, and 27 abstentions.

That doesn’t necessarily forecast the outcome of the Clendenin-Tant vote itself, but could be an indication, party insiders said.
