The day after being bombarded with applications for parades and public gatherings during the RNC, city officials issued their first denials Tuesday to groups that had wanted to march from downtown to the convention site.
Fight Back Florida and the AFL-CIO had proposed holding rallies during the week of the RNC, then taking their own path to the convention viewing area. City officials say that’ll pose too much risk to marchers, drivers and public safety in general. It will also require shutting down State Road 60 and will take police officers away from other duties, the city said. They’ve offered both groups a slot in the as-yet undetermined official parade route. Group members are also free to parade on city sidewalks as long as they obey all traffic laws, the letter from special events supervisor Susan Robinson said.
