Tampa GOP Debate Closer to Happening

Posted Apr 30, 2007 by Michael Fechter

An interactive Republican presidential debate to be broadcast from Tampa this summer is a big step closer to reality now that the first major candidate has committed to attend. The debate would be broadcast on conservative talk radio stations nationally and on a related Web site.

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney has agreed to participate in the Salem News/Talk Online debate and talks continue with the campaigns of Arizona Sen. John McCain and former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, said General Manager Chuck DeFeo. The network has more than 2,000 affiliates in 305 markets. In Tampa, that includes WTBN, 570 AM; WTWD, 910 AM; and WGUL, 860 AM.

The exact date and location haven’t been determined. Organizers are hoping for a June date at a college campus. The debate will be followed with a straw poll at Townhall.com

“The results of the Townhall.com straw poll will send a clear message of where the Republican field stands with the conservative base of talk radio listeners and internet activists,” Townhall editor Jonathan Garthwaite wrote in a column Friday.

Correction: In an earlier version of this post, I mistakenly referred to WTBN as 560 AM. In fact, it is 570 on the AM dial.
