Taddeo-Goldstein to challenge Clendenin for state Dem chairmanship

So far, the only announced challenger to Tampa’s Alan Clendenin for state Democratic Party chairman is South Florida businesswoman and Democratic activist Annette Taddeo-Goldstein.

Taddeo-Goldstein, who’s of Columbian and Italian extraction, is a long-time Democratic fundraiser and party activist who was involved in the Obama and Kerry presidential campaigns. She operates a Miami translation service, catering mostly to businesses, in scores of languages.

Before she can run for state party chairman, Taddeo-Goldstein must hold a post in her local party organization, which she doesn’t at the moment—she expects to win election Monday night as chairman of the Miami-Dade County Democratic Party. She said she initially decided to run to replace retiring county Chairman Richard Lydecker, and then was convinced by supporters to seek the state chair also.

She’s married to a practicing psychologist, and has two college-age stepdaughters and one young daughter with her husband.

Taddeo-Goldstein said the party’s main challenge is to maintain the momentum and voter turnout energy demonstrated during the recent election, while holding or increasing its domination of black and Hispanic votes.

“It’s a very important goal to continue that momentum into a non-presidential year and win the governor’s race,” she said. “We need somebody who can unite our party. I’m very good at bringing people together, keeping the peace.”

Taddeo-Goldstein has run for office unsuccessfully twice, against Republican U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen in 2008, and for a Miami-Dade county commissioner’s seat in 2010.

Clendenin, a Sanford native and veteran Democratic activist, is a Hillsborough County delegate to the state Democratic Party executive committee and a Florida delegate to the Democratic National Committee. He’s an air traffic controller active in the controller’s union.

Current state Democratic Party Chairman Rod Smith has announced he won’t run for re-election. The election to replace him, to be held among members of the state executive committee, will be at a party meeting in Orlando January 27.
