Otto: As rail goes, Florida seems to be on a train to nowhere

There was a story this week that Amtrak was considering cutting a 600-mile stretch from its Southwest Chief that runs from Chicago to Los Angeles. The move would eliminate service to a dozen or more towns in Kansas, Colorado and New Mexico. Amtrak might reconsider if those four states cough up $4 million a year for the next 10 years to upgrade track and services.

Twenty-million dollars may sound like a lot to get the already-remodeled Forum ready for an acceptance speech, even if it is by the prosperous Mitt Romney.

But at least you can see how all that money is being spent in this video from the Republican National Convention’s Committee on Arrangements.

As the Tribune’s Ted Jackovics reported last month, “The seats are coming out, the lights are coming in.”
