Scott to sell doughnuts at North Dale Mabry bakery

Yet another political figure is taking a page from the book of former Florida governor and Sen. Bob Graham by doing “workdays” at ordinary jobs—it’s Gov. Rick Scott, who’ll begin by selling doughnuts in a Tampa doughnut shop Wednesday morning.

Scott even got the blessing of Graham, a Democratic icon, for the endeavor.

In a news release, Scott’s office quoted Graham as saying, “I commend Governor Scott on his commitment to understanding the hopes and concerns of Floridians by working with them.”

Graham said the workdays gave him insight into how people earn their living, “how they live their lives, pursue their dreams and confront their challenges,” and hopes Scott will get the same “rich experiences.”

Scott said he’ll design his workdays to duplicate the variety of jobs he had growing up, including making doughnuts, cleaning phone booths and selling groceries. When he sold doughnuts as young man, however, Scott owned the shop. He has said frequently that in order to provide steady work for his mother, he bought two shops with savings from a business he had on the side while going to college.

Another job Scott says he held as a youth was delivering newspapers. No word from the governor’s office on whether he’ll do that job also.
____________
Update: The governor’s office has now announced the location of Scott’s first workday— Nicola’s Donuts and Bakery at 14390 N. Dale Mabry Hwy. If you want a doughnut served by the chief executive of the nation’s fourth-largest state, get there sometime between 6 a.m. and about 8:30 a.m.
