Sachs/M-D poll shows McCollum leading Sink

A new installment of the Florida Poll, done by Mason-Dixon Polling & Research for Ron Sachs Communications, shows Republican Bill McCollum leading Democrat Alex Sink in the governor’s race by 41 percent to 35 percent.

That result is little changed from the last installment of the same poll, done in mid-May, which showed McCollum with a 40-34 percent lead.

The poll also shows an even race, but with a large majority of voters undecided, in the Democratic primary for attorney general, one of the hottest primaries in the races for three open Florida Cabinet seats in 2010.

Former state Sen. Rod Smith of Alachua, not yet a declared candidate, narrowly led in that race with 13 percent, over state Sen. Dan Gelber of Miami with 11 percent and state Sen. Dave Aronberg of Greenacres with 10 percent—leaving 66 percent of Democratic voters in the sample undecided.

In a possible Republican primary for governor, the poll showed state Sen. Paula Dockery as little threat to McCollum. He led her 53 percent to 4 percent, but again with a large undecided category of 43 percent.

Other Cabinet primary races showed wide open races with large majorities of undecided voters. Those included U.S. Rep. Adam Putnam of Bartow v. state Sen. Cary Baker of Eustis in the GOP primary for agriculture commissioner, and state Sen. Jeff Atwater of North Palm Beach v. state Rep. Pat Patterson of Deland in the GOP primary for chief financial officer.

More on the poll results here.
