Mark Cross, speaking on behalf of the Ron Paul campaign, got some cheers from the crowd of mostly establishment Republicans at the Presidency 5 convention, but some boos when he trashed Mitt Romney and Rick Perry.
Cross blamed Paul’s failure to be a leader in the race on news coverage, even bashing the Republicans’ favorite news outlet, Fox, because moderators didn’t give Paul enough microphone time in Monday night’s debate.
“Tthe medias is now trying to assert that we have only two choices – the candidate from the Ted Kennedy wing of the party or the candidate from the Al Gore wing of the party,” he said. The jab at Romney apparently referred to his run against Kennedy for the U.S. Senate in 1994, when Romney adopted several comparatively moderate or liberal positions on social issues to be competitive among Massachusetts Democrats. Perry was Texas state chairman for Gore for president in 1988, before Perry became a Republican.
That didn’t go over well with the crowd of Republicans, among who Romney and Perry likely are the top candidates.
“Here’s something the media doesn’t want you to know—Ron Paul is the most electable candidate in the 2012 race,” he said.
