Presidential candidate Mitt Romney will talk about immigration policy to a group of Republican Hispanics meeting in Tampa today, and although he won’t mention Texas Gov. Rick Perry by name, the subject is one way Romney is taking aim at Perry.
For example, according to campaign aides, Romney intends to emphasize his opposition while he was governor of Massachusetts to legislation allowing in-state tuition at state universities for children of illegal immigrants. In Texas, children of illegals can qualify for in-state tuition.
Perry has a weak spot on the issue, according to some anti-illegal immigration activists.
“Gov. Perry is very eager to appear tough on illegal immigration, but upon closer inspection he’s part of the problem,” William Gheen, who runs the North Carolina-based political action committee Americans for Legal Immigration, told the Associated Press recently.
Romney is about to speak to a breakfast with about 150 people at a convention of the Republiican National Hispanic Assembly. Then he’ll open his local campaign headquarters at the corner of Platt Street and Bayshore Boulevard.
Herman Cain will appear before the same group at lunch, and Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus at a reception tonight.
