Retired Colonel to Run for Castor’s Seat

TAMPA Retired Air Force Col. Evelio Otero Jr., a Tampa Republican, has announced he will enter the race for the District 11 congressional seat now held by U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor, D-Tampa.
Otero will face Hillsborough County Commissioner Mark Sharpe in the Republican primary next August. Also in the race is Tea Party Republican Josh Kiernan, of Palm Harbor.
Otero served at MacDill Air Force Base as security cooperation development project officer, according to his LinkedIn page. Among the accomplishments Otero has listed on the page is developing the “first ever security cooperation plan for the U.S. Special Operations Command.”
He now works as a military/security consultant, according to the page, and lists himself as chief executive officer of Legacy LLC. However, Otero is not listed on the Florida Division Corporations under any companies by that name. He could not be reached for comment.
Castor was first elected to Congress in 2006. She has raised $378,902 so far for the 2012 election. Sharpe reported raising $71,893 in his first quarter of fund-raising.
