National Republican Party Chairman backed the debt ceiling deal in comments today in Tampa, even though the leading GOP candidates for president have said they oppose it.
Priebus said the idea of budget cutting arose only because there was a Republican majority in the House, and credit House Speaker John Boehner with a win.
“Given the situation, it was a Republican victory in the sense that we were able to change the conversation,” he said.
Most of the leading presidential GOP presidential candidates have opposed the deal. In Tampa Tuesday, Tim Pawlenty called it “disappointing and underwhelming,” and said it was only a band-aid for a long term problem.
John Huntsman supports the deal; Michele Bachmann and Mitt Romney oppose it, although other candidates have criticized Romney for waiting until the deal was nearly finalized before coming out against it.
Asked whether the presidential candidates should have backed Boehner, he said their opposition was “a matter of presidential candidates explaining to the American people where they see their vision for America.”
Democratic Party leaders also have backed the deal, despite dissatisfaction with it expressed by some Democratic officeholders and candidates.
